POWERTRAIN DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT
This warning light may illuminate red or yellow / amber on the Ford Transit or Ford Transit Connect. The cog with an exclamation mark inside indicates a malfunction within the management system of the engine, a sensor or software fault. With the engine warning light on the vehicle may lose power but will continue to run. If the light flashes while driving you should avoid heavy acceleration or deceleration. If the cog warning light is lit up together with the engine management light then a loss of power and possible engine cut out is likely to happen.
If the fault is generated by a diesel fuel injector fault or fuel diesel injection system, there could be several very common reasons for this including :
- a faulty diesel injector
- Diesel injector seal failured
- fuel pressure regulator fault
- engine ECU requiring software update
A correct diagnostic will involve procedures including DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) checking live fuel pressure data readings, assessment of injector correction factors and physical diesel injector return leak test. Very often it’s found that the engine ECU is running an older version of software. If no visible faults are found on the injector leak back test but the DTC check found issues related to diesel injector correction and fuel pressure in the common rail system, it’s imperative that the latest software update is downloaded into the engine ECU. Following the engine ECU software update, all fuel pressure calibration and diesel injector calibrations must be carried out. The procedure of fuel pressure adaptation is carried out diagnostically and involves the engine running in different modes controlled by engine ECU in order set up fuel pressure.
Faulty diesel injector or faulty fuel pressure regulator will prevent adaptation process to be carried out successfully.
Whenever a diesel injector is replaced or after an engine ECU software update on Ford Transit 2.2 tdci or 2.4 tdci, injector programming is required. Each injector is defined during production with its own characteristic code which must be learned by PCM in order to be correctly operated. This fine tuning helps to reduce emissions and improve performance. Injector codes are found on top of the injector and consist of 16 characters.
